What a Modern Kitchen Asks of an Old Electrical System
A kitchen built in Lake Hills in 1956 was designed around a handful of loads. A range, a refrigerator, maybe a few countertop outlets on the same circuit as the breakfast nook light. Today the same room might run a dishwasher, a disposal, a microwave drawer, an induction cooktop, a wall oven, an espresso machine and an air fryer at the same time on a Sunday morning. The wires in the wall did not change. The demand on them did.
Most of the electrical work we do in Bellevue kitchens comes down to closing that gap properly, once, while the walls are open.
Starting With the Panel
Every kitchen job begins at the electrical panel, usually in the garage or a hall closet. We look at three things.
Service size. Many postwar houses here started with 60 or 100 amp service. Some have been changed since, some have not. The number on the main breaker is only the start; what matters is what the house already draws and what you plan to add.
Physical space. A panel can have enough capacity on paper and still have no open slots for the new circuits a kitchen needs. Tandem breakers and subpanels can sometimes solve that. Sometimes they are a patch on a panel that should be retired.
Condition and make. Scorched bus bars, double tapped breakers, and certain older panel brands with a poor record for breakers that fail to trip all change the conversation. We tell you what we see and why it matters, without turning a survey into a sales pitch for a panel you do not need.
If your plans include induction, an electric wall oven, a heat pump water heater or an electric car charger, we do a load calculation for the whole house rather than guessing. That tells us whether the kitchen fits on the current service or whether a service change belongs in the budget from day one.
Rewiring the Kitchen Itself
Current electrical code expects a kitchen to be wired very differently from the one in a 1950s rambler. In practical terms that usually means:
- At least two 20 amp small appliance circuits serving the countertop receptacles, so a kettle and a toaster are not fighting over one breaker.
- Dedicated circuits for the dishwasher, the disposal and a built in microwave.
- GFCI protection on countertop receptacles and anywhere near the sink.
- AFCI protection on kitchen circuits.
- Receptacles spaced along the counters so no stretch of work surface is far from an outlet, including on an island or peninsula.
- A properly sized 240 volt circuit for an electric or induction range.
The rules that apply to your job are the ones in force when the permit is issued, and the inspector has the final word. We plan to meet them, pull the electrical permit, and leave the walls open until the rough inspection is signed off.
Old Wire Behind the Walls
Rewiring the kitchen gives us a look at what else is in the walls. In these houses we commonly find original two wire cable with no ground, cloth covered wire that has gone brittle where it passed near a light fixture, and splices from later owners who added outlets with whatever was on the shelf. In houses built or added onto in the late 1960s and early 1970s, we sometimes find aluminum branch wiring.
None of these automatically means rewiring the whole house. We replace what the kitchen touches, make safe connections where new wire meets old, and give you an honest note about the rest so you can decide on your own schedule.
Lighting That Works in a Small Kitchen
Most rambler kitchens were lit by one ceiling fixture in the middle of the room, which puts your own shadow on the counter every time you stand at it. A better plan is built in layers.
Task lighting under the upper cabinets, lighting the counter directly. LED strips or low profile fixtures, wired to a switch rather than plugged into an outlet.
Ceiling lights placed over the edge of the counters rather than in a neat grid, so the light lands in front of you instead of behind you.
Accent or pendant lighting over a peninsula or eating area, on its own switch or dimmer.
Washington State Energy Code sets requirements for lighting efficiency and controls, and we design to it. The long gray months here are a good reason to take lighting seriously anyway. A kitchen that feels dim in November gets used less.
Ventilation Wiring and Make-Up Air
Closed windows for much of the year mean cooking moisture and smoke stay in the house unless a hood removes them. We wire range hoods that duct outside rather than recirculate. Larger hoods can trigger a requirement for make-up air, which adds ductwork and controls, so we size the hood to how you cook rather than to the biggest one in the showroom.
