Induction, Old Wiring and the Lake Hills Rambler Kitchen: What to Check Before You Pick Appliances

A lot of kitchen remodels in Bellevue now start with the same sentence. We want to get rid of the gas range and go to induction. Sometimes it is about indoor air, sometimes about a heat pump replacing the furnace, sometimes just about how nice induction is to cook on. It is a reasonable goal in almost any house.
In a 1950s or 1960s rambler, though, that sentence has a second half nobody says out loud: and we assume the electrical can handle it. That assumption is where schedules slip and budgets grow. This post walks through what we check in these houses, in the order we check it, so you can go into appliance shopping knowing what the house can actually support.
Why Ramblers Are Their Own Case
The single story houses across Lake Hills, Crossroads, Eastgate and Newport Hills were built for a young family in the years after the war. They were practical and affordable. The electrical systems reflected that. Service was often 60 amps in the earliest houses and 100 amps later on. Kitchens had a range circuit and a couple of general circuits that also fed the dining room, a hall and sometimes a bedroom.
Over seventy years most of these houses have been changed by several owners. Some got a new panel in the 1980s. Some got an addition with its own subpanel. Some got an electric dryer, a hot tub circuit or baseboard heaters added to whatever was already there. So there is no reliable rule about what a given rambler has. The only way to know is to look.
Step One: Read the Panel
Start in the garage, or wherever the panel lives. You can learn a surprising amount without taking the cover off, and you should never take the cover off yourself.
The main breaker. It is usually at the top and labeled with a number. That number is the service size in amps. If there is no main breaker and instead a row of six or so larger breakers that together shut off the house, you have an older split bus arrangement, which is worth noting.
Open spaces. Count the empty slots. A kitchen remodel commonly adds four to seven circuits. A panel packed full of tandem breakers already is telling you something.
The label. The panel manufacturer’s name is on the door or inside. A few brands that were common in mid-century houses have a poor reputation for breakers that do not trip reliably. If you see one of those names, it does not mean your house is about to catch fire. It does mean an electrician should weigh in before new load goes on it.
Signs of heat. Discoloration around a breaker, a warm panel door, or a faint burnt smell are reasons to call an electrician this week, remodel or not.
When we do this during a survey, we also open the panel, look at the bus and connections, check for double tapped breakers, and confirm the service entrance and grounding. That part is for a licensed professional.
Step Two: The Load Calculation
Here is the part people skip. The question is not whether an induction range will work on your panel by itself. The question is whether everything the house draws, including the new range, fits within the service.
A load calculation adds up the house’s lighting and receptacle load by square footage, the fixed appliances, the heating and cooling equipment and the cooking equipment, then applies the demand factors the electrical code allows, because not everything runs at full power at once. The result tells you how much of the service the house needs on paper.
This matters in Bellevue right now because kitchens are rarely the only electrical change on the horizon. Plenty of homeowners are also thinking about a heat pump for heating and cooling, a heat pump water heater, and a charger for an electric car. Each of those on its own might fit. All of them together, on 100 amp service, often do not.
So the useful version of the calculation includes what you plan to add over the next several years, not just this kitchen. If the answer is that a service change is coming, it is far cheaper to know that now and put the new panel in during the kitchen job than to squeeze the kitchen onto the old panel and replace it in two years.
There are also products that help avoid a full service change, such as load management devices that pause a car charger while the range is running, and some induction ranges designed to run on smaller circuits. They are legitimate options in the right house. We look at them with you rather than defaulting to the most expensive answer.
Step Three: What Is in the Walls
A kitchen remodel opens walls, which makes it the best chance you will get to see what the house is wired with. In these ramblers we tend to find some mix of the following.
Ungrounded two wire cable. Common in houses from this period. It works, but it cannot provide a ground for three prong outlets. Inside the kitchen we replace it.
Cloth insulated wire. Often still sound in the middle of a wall run and brittle near light fixtures, where decades of heat have cooked the insulation. Worth replacing where the remodel touches it.
Later additions done casually. An outlet added off the end of a lighting circuit, a splice buried in a wall with no box, a mix of wire gauges on one circuit. These are the things that actually cause trouble, and they rarely show up until the drywall comes off.
Aluminum branch wiring. Used in some houses built or added onto roughly between the mid 1960s and early 1970s, when copper prices spiked. The wire itself is not the main issue. The connections are, because aluminum expands and contracts more than copper and can loosen at devices not rated for it. In a kitchen we replace those runs with copper. Elsewhere there are approved connection methods, and we will tell you where we saw it.
The important thing is that finding any of these during demolition should not blow up your budget, because a good estimate for a house of this age already expects some of it. When we price a rambler kitchen we include replacing the kitchen’s wiring outright rather than hoping the old runs can be reused.
Step Four: Circuits the New Kitchen Needs
With the panel and the walls understood, the kitchen’s own circuits are straightforward to plan. A typical remodel here ends up with two or more 20 amp circuits for the countertop receptacles, dedicated circuits for the dishwasher and disposal, one for a built in microwave, one for the refrigerator in many layouts, a 240 volt circuit for the range or cooktop, and separate lighting circuits. GFCI protection covers the countertop receptacles. AFCI protection covers the kitchen circuits. The exact requirements are whatever applies when the permit is issued, and the inspector confirms them at rough in.
Two details are worth deciding early. First, where the island or peninsula receptacles go, since the rules for those have changed over the years and it affects the cabinet design. Second, whether you want receptacles inside an appliance garage or a pantry cabinet, which is easy during framing and awkward later.
Step Five: Ventilation, Now That the Burners Are Gone
Switching from gas to induction removes combustion byproducts from the kitchen, but cooking itself still produces grease, moisture and smoke. In a Pacific Northwest house where the windows stay shut from October through much of spring, that moisture has to go somewhere, and a recirculating hood mostly moves it around.
Our strong preference is a hood ducted to the outside. In a rambler that is usually easy, because the attic is right there and the run to the roof or an exterior wall is short. What trips people up is sizing. A large, powerful hood can pull enough air out of a reasonably tight house that the code requires a make-up air system to replace it, which means more ductwork, a damper and controls. For most induction cooking a well placed hood that covers the cooktop area and moves a moderate amount of air does the job without crossing that line. Capture area, meaning how well the hood covers the cooking surface, matters more than the number on the box.
Step Six: Only Now, Pick the Appliances
Once the panel, the load and the ventilation are settled, appliance shopping gets simpler. You know whether a 40 amp or 50 amp range circuit is available, whether a second wall oven fits, and whether the hood you like needs make-up air. The design can then be drawn around real appliance dimensions, which matters because cabinet orders depend on them.
A practical note: induction cookware has to be magnetic. Check your pans with a fridge magnet before you budget for a new set.
What This Does to the Budget
People reasonably want a number. For a Bellevue rambler, the electrical portion of a kitchen remodel, covering the kitchen circuits, lighting and hood wiring, often lands somewhere from the mid four figures to the low twenty thousands, depending on how much of the old wire has to go and how much lighting you want. A service change and new panel is a separate line, and the cost moves with whether the utility connection needs work and where the panel sits. Opening walls, moving plumbing and the finish work sit on top of that.
What moves the number most is not the brand of range. It is whether the service has to change, whether the kitchen wall is bearing, and whether the sink moves. Those three questions account for most of the difference between a modest remodel and a large one.
When Not to Spend
Not every older kitchen needs every item on this list. If your house already had a service change and newer panel, if the kitchen was rewired by a previous owner with permits, and you are keeping a gas range for now, the electrical work can be light. We have told plenty of homeowners that their wiring was fine and the money belonged in cabinets.
Likewise, if a service change is not in the budget this year, it can make sense to wire the kitchen for induction now, with the range circuit and the conduit in place, and run a gas range until the panel is replaced. The walls only have to open once.
The Order That Saves Money
If there is one takeaway worth writing down, it is the order. Panel and load first. Then the walls and the structure. Then the circuits and ventilation. Then appliances. Then cabinets and counters. Homeowners who go in that order rarely get a surprise change order for electrical work. Homeowners who start with a cabinet showroom often do.
